Hi fans! A question that comes up a lot is why harps have colored strings. Well, I'm happy to explain! My Harp is a Lyon and Healy Chicago Concert pedal harp, which consists of 47 strings. These strings correspond to the white keys on a piano although the black keys are not represented because their sounds are made by changing the pedals.
The strings of a harp are color-coded for quick reference. All of the C strings are red and all of the F strings are black or dark blue. All of the other strings are white, or not colored as in the case of metal wire strings. Why the colors? It is simply so we harpists can find our place at a glance. Just imagine a piano with just flat, white keys...even the most expert pianist would have a hard time playing that ;). Got questions?
